What Order Do Water Treatment Systems Go In? The Sequence Nobody Explains

Ask what treatment your well needs and you will get answers. Ask what order the equipment goes in and the conversation usually stops.

It is not a detail. The order of a treatment train is the engineering, because every stage exists partly to protect the stage behind it. Get the sequence wrong and you can install exactly the right equipment, spend exactly the right money, and watch it fail anyway.

The Correct Order

Water flows in that order, from the pressure tank toward the house. Stage 7 is separate — a point-of-use unit under the sink, not part of the whole-house train.

Why Each Position Is Where It Is

Sediment goes first because everything downstream fouls faster in dirty water. A 5-micron pre-filter is mandatory ahead of any UV lamp, whatever the water looks like — particles shade bacteria from the light, and shaded bacteria survive.

The acid neutraliser goes before the softener, and this trips up more installations than any other stage. A calcite neutraliser works by dissolving calcium carbonate into the water to raise the pH. That is literally adding hardness. If your softener was sized from a hardness test taken before the neutraliser went in, it is now undersized and regenerating constantly.

Size the softener for the water that will actually reach it.

The iron filter goes before the softener. Softener resin will hold some iron — roughly up to 3 mg/L in good conditions — but it is not designed for it, and it pays in capacity. Above that, iron coats and fouls the resin bed, and severe fouling is not something you rinse out; it is a resin replacement. An oxidising filter ahead of the softener takes that load off.

The softener goes before the UV, because hardness above 7 grains per gallon scales the quartz sleeve. This is the failure that catches people out most cruelly:

A scaled UV lamp still glows. The controller reports no fault. Nothing at the tap changes. The dose reaching the water quietly falls below the level that inactivates anything, and the first sign of trouble is a positive bacteria test months later.

UV goes last for the same reason it goes after everything else: it is the most easily defeated stage in the train and has no capacity to remove anything. It only kills what reaches it, in water clear enough for the light to pass through.

The UV Feed-Water Limits

If you are installing UV, these are the numbers your feed water has to meet. They decide what has to sit in front of the lamp.

And one specification not to compromise on: for a private well, use a system certified to NSF/ANSI 55 Class A, which delivers 40 mJ/cm². Class B units deliver 16 mJ/cm² and are rated only for water already known to be microbiologically safe — which is precisely not the situation a private well is in.

Reverse Osmosis Is Not Part of the Train

RO sits under the kitchen sink, treating only drinking and cooking water. That is deliberate: whole-house RO is expensive, wastes water, and is unnecessary for contaminants whose only exposure route is ingestion.

Nitrate, arsenic, uranium, fluoride, lead and PFAS are all in that category. You do not need to shower in RO water.

Radon is the exception that proves the rule — its main exposure is inhalation from showering, so it needs whole-house aeration rather than a tap filter.

Most Wells Do Not Need Most of This

The table above is the full sequence, not a shopping list. The majority of wells need one or two stages, and buying equipment for contaminants you do not have is the most expensive mistake in this field.

The order of operations for your money:

  1. Get a comprehensive lab panel first. Hardness, iron, manganese, pH, turbidity, bacteria, plus the health contaminants your region is known for. Every sizing decision below depends on numbers you do not have yet.
  2. Fix the water chemistry that damages things — pH first if it is low, because acidic water is dissolving your plumbing while you deliberate.
  3. Then add the stages your results actually call for, in the sequence above.
  4. Retest the treated water after installation. This is the step everyone skips, and it is the only proof the money worked.

Any supplier who quotes you a system without seeing a lab report is selling you a package, not a solution. The right question to ask them is not "what does this remove" — it is "what did you size this for, and what happens to it if my iron is 4 mg/L."
