How to Size a Water Softener for Well Water (With the Iron Correction Nobody Mentions)

Softener sizing is where well owners get quoted a number and have no way to check it. "You need a 48,000 grain unit" is either right or a guess, and there is no way to tell the difference without doing the arithmetic yourself.

The arithmetic is not hard. It is four multiplications and one correction that most online calculators leave out.

The Formula

Step 1 — convert your hardness to grains per gallon.

Lab reports usually give hardness in mg/L as calcium carbonate. Softeners are sized in grains.

grains per gallon = mg/L ÷ 17.1

A hardness of 342 mg/L is 20 gpg. (17.1 is not a rounding — it is the definition: one grain in one US gallon.)

Step 2 — add the iron correction.

This is the step that gets skipped, and it is the reason plenty of correctly-calculated softeners are undersized in practice.

Resin removes iron along with hardness, and that iron occupies capacity. Two mg/L of iron adds 10 gpg to your sizing hardness — on a 20 gpg well, that is 50 percent more load than the hardness number alone suggests.

Step 3 — multiply by household demand.

daily grains = sizing hardness × people × 75 gallons per person per day

Seventy-five gallons per person per day is the standard sizing figure. It sounds high, and it includes everything — showers, laundry, dishes, toilets.

Step 4 — multiply by days between regenerations.

capacity needed = daily grains × 7

Seven days is the design target. A correctly sized softener regenerates about weekly.

Step 5 — round up to the next stocked size: 24,000, 32,000, 40,000, 48,000, 64,000, 80,000 grains.

A Worked Example

A family of four. Hardness 342 mg/L. Iron 2 mg/L.

  1. 342 ÷ 17.1 = 20 gpg
  2. 2 mg/L iron × 5 = 10 gpg, so sizing hardness = 30 gpg
  3. 30 × 4 people × 75 gallons = 9,000 grains per day
  4. 9,000 × 7 days = 63,000 grains needed
  5. Next size up: a 64,000 grain softener

Without the iron correction, the same household calculates 42,000 and buys a 48,000 grain unit — a full size too small, regenerating every four or five days for the life of the equipment.

Why Undersizing Is Worse Than Oversizing

An undersized softener does not fail. It just regenerates constantly, and everything that follows from that is expensive:

Moderate oversizing costs a little more up front and regenerates less. The limit is real but generous — very heavily oversized units can suffer channelling, where water carves preferred paths through resin that has sat idle too long. Most homes never approach that.

Where Iron Stops Being a Correction and Becomes a Filter

The 5 gpg per mg/L correction holds while the softener can actually cope. Above roughly 3 mg/L of iron, it cannot:

Above 3 mg/L, put an air-injection or greensand oxidising filter ahead of the softener and size the softener for hardness plus the residual iron only. The same applies to manganese above 0.05 mg/L.

Details That Matter as Much as Capacity

Get a metered valve, not a timer. A timer regenerates on a schedule regardless of use — wasting salt while you are away, running out of capacity when the house is full. A metered valve tracks actual gallons.

Test hardness after any pH correction. A calcite acid neutraliser raises pH by dissolving calcium carbonate into the water, which adds hardness. Size the softener for the water that reaches it, not the water in the well.

Salt type is not the upgrade it is sold as. Evaporated pellets are cleaner and bridge less than rock salt; potassium chloride is an option for sodium-restricted households at several times the cost. Neither changes capacity.

Softened water is slightly more corrosive. If you already have low pH or blue-green staining, deal with the pH — softening alone can make lead and copper leaching marginally worse.

What to Record

Write down the hardness in both units, the iron, the pH, the household size you sized for, and the capacity you bought. When the unit starts regenerating more often than weekly, that record is what tells you whether the water changed, the household grew, or the resin is fouling — and no supplier can diagnose it for you without those numbers.
