Your water has been clear for years. This morning it came out of the tap looking like weak milk, or carrying a swirl of grit that settled in the bottom of the glass. Nothing about your routine changed — so what changed underground?
Sudden cloudiness is your well's way of announcing that something moved: the water table, the pump, the earth around the casing, or surface water finding a new path in. Some causes are harmless and fix themselves; one of them means stop drinking the water today. The diagnosis starts with a glass and three minutes.
The Glass Test: Air, Sediment, or Something Else
Fill a clear glass and watch it:
- Clears from the bottom up in 1–3 minutes → air bubbles. Thousands of micro-bubbles make water look milky; as they rise, the water clears upward. Usually harmless — but note why air is in the lines (below).
- Particles sink; clears from the top down → sediment. Sand, silt, or rust settling out. Your problem is mechanical.

The Six Causes, From Benign to Urgent
1. Air from a well running low. Sputtering taps + milky water often means the pump is intermittently gulping air — the water level is dropping near the intake. Cross-check the well-running-dry warning signs. Protect the pump first; it's the expensive part.
2. Recent heavy rain or snowmelt. Cloudiness that follows storms means surface water is reaching your well — through a compromised cap, low casing, or fractured rock. This is the stop-and-test scenario: surface water brings bacteria with the silt. Inspect the wellhead and test for coliform before trusting the water; boil or use bottled in the meantime. 4. Dropping water table. In drought or late summer, the pump draws from lower, siltier water near the well bottom. Cloudiness that arrives in August and leaves in October fits this pattern.
5. Failing well screen or collapsing casing. Sand — actual gritty sand, suddenly — in an older well suggests the screen or casing is deteriorating and letting formation material in. Sand also destroys pumps from the inside. This one's a well contractor call; sleeves and liners can often fix it short of a new well.
6. Nearby drilling, blasting, or construction. New wells, quarry blasting, or heavy construction can rattle sediment loose or shift flow paths in fractured-rock aquifers. Usually settles in days; document dates in case it doesn't.
Protect the House While You Diagnose
Whatever the cause, keep the grit out of your fixtures, appliances, and treatment gear:
- A spin-down pre-filter ($30–$80) is the first line for sand and coarse grit — a reusable screen you purge by opening a valve, no cartridges to buy. Install ahead of everything else.
- A cartridge sediment filter with a multipack of cartridges catches the finer fraction — during a sediment event you may swap cartridges weekly, which is exactly when the pressure-drop rule earns its keep.
- If cloudiness persists, test: turbidity plus bacteria at minimum — a lab kit settles the "is it safe" question with numbers instead of squinting at a glass.
