Boiling Well Water: One Minute, Three at Altitude — and the One Case Where It Makes Things Worse

Boiling is the oldest water treatment there is, and on a private well it is the right response to a bacteria result while you sort out the cause.

It is also the most commonly misapplied advice in well water, because it works brilliantly for one category of problem and makes another category actively worse.

Doing It Properly

Bring the water to a rolling boil and hold it for one minute. Above 6,500 feet, hold it for three minutes, because water boils at a lower temperature as altitude increases.

A rolling boil means vigorous, continuous bubbling — not the first few bubbles forming on the bottom of the pan.

Longer is not safer. By the time water reaches a rolling boil, the pathogens of concern in drinking water are already inactivated; the hold time is a margin for certainty. Boiling for twenty minutes achieves nothing except a smaller volume of more concentrated minerals.

If the water is cloudy, filter it through a clean cloth or let it settle and pour off the clear water before boiling. Suspended particles can shield microorganisms.

What Boiling Makes Worse

Here is the part that matters most, and it is the reverse of most people's intuition.

Boiling removes water as steam. Everything dissolved in the water stays behind. The volume goes down, the contaminant mass does not, and the concentration goes up.

That means boiling increases the concentration of:

Never boil water to deal with a chemical contaminant. If your well has high nitrate and you boil it before mixing infant formula, you have made the exposure worse, not better — and nitrate at elevated levels is specifically dangerous to infants under six months.

For chemical contaminants the answers are bottled water, or point-of-use treatment: reverse osmosis for nitrate, arsenic, uranium, fluoride and lead; specific media for particular contaminants. Not the stove.

Storing It

  1. Let it cool covered, on its own. Do not add ice or cold tap water — that reintroduces exactly what you removed.
  2. Refrigerate in clean, covered containers.
  3. Use within about three days.
  4. Label containers, especially if others in the house might not know the situation.

Boiled water tastes flat because boiling drives off dissolved gases. Pouring it between two clean containers a few times restores it.

Boiling Is a Bridge, Not a Fix

A boil advisory on a private well is a holding measure while you find and close the pathway. Nobody boils water indefinitely.

The sequence: boil now, inspect the wellhead and surroundings, shock chlorinate, flush, retest for both coliform and E. coli, retest again a few weeks later, and if bacteria recur, install UV disinfection certified to NSF/ANSI 55 Class A with feed water inside its limits.

Log the dates — when you started boiling, what you found, when you shocked it, and both retest results. Bacteria problems tend to be seasonal, and next spring the record will tell you whether you are looking at a recurrence or something new.
